What is the Oregon Sales Tax Rate?

Oregon’s statewide sales tax rate is 0%. The state does not impose a general sales tax, and local governments are not permitted to add one. That means the price you see is the price you pay—no percentage added at checkout. However, some Oregon businesses that operate in multiple states must collect sales tax when selling to customers outside of Oregon. It’s also important to note that while Oregon doesn’t collect sales tax, it does have other types of business taxes and fees.

How to Calculate Sales Tax in Oregon

Good news—you don’t have to! Since Oregon doesn’t have a state or local sales tax, there’s nothing to calculate for in-state purchases. If you’re making sales to customers outside Oregon, you may be required to collect and remit sales tax based on the destination state’s rules. In those cases:

Multiply the Purchase Amount by the relevant state’s Sales Tax Rate

Add Sales Tax Amount to the Purchase Amount to get the Total Cost

Report and remit Sales Tax according to that state's rules.

For Oregon-based businesses, this is especially important for online sales!

Sales Tax = Purchase Amount × Sales Tax Rate
Total Cost = Purchase Amount + Sales Tax

What items are exempt from sales tax in Oregon?

Since there is no general sales tax, nearly all purchases are tax-free in Oregon. That includes:

Prescription Medications & Medical Equipment

Tax-free. like everything else.

Groceries & prepared food

No tax applied at checkout.

Clothing & electronics

Fully exempt from sales tax.

That said, specific fees, licenses, or industry-specific taxes (such as the Corporate Activity Tax, and excise taxes on recreational marijuana) may still apply in some cases.

FAQs

Does Oregon have a sales tax?

No. Oregon does not have a state or local sales tax. This applies to nearly all retail purchases, including groceries, clothing, electronics, and dining. Consumers pay the sticker price with no added tax at checkout.

Do Oregon businesses collect sales tax from out-of-state customers?

Possibly. If an Oregon business sells to customers in other states, it may be required to collect sales tax based on the buyer’s location. This depends on economic nexus thresholds in each state, so it’s important to check those rules.

Are there any hidden taxes in Oregon?
